Dana Schultz Launches Campaign for 87th Assembly District
Top Priorities: Bolstering Local Economy, Rural Schools, and Family Farms
Little Black – Today, on a family farm just outside of Medford, surrounded by family and supporters, Dana Schultz officially announced her candidacy in the 87th Assembly District. The 87th district covers all of Price, Rusk, and Taylor Counties with a few townships in Sawyer and Marathon Counties.
“Our district deserves a Representative who will stand up for rural communities down in Madison,” stated Schultz. “Families in this area are struggling to make ends meet, faced with one of the highest unemployment rates in the state. I can be counted on to work hard to keep and bring family supporting jobs to our district.”
Schultz added, "Many of us are concerned with the direction Madison is pushing agriculture. The 'get big or get out' mentality is hurting not only local family farmers, but neighbors of factory farms, and anyone concerned about having enough clean drinking and surface water."
Schultz was raised on the family dairy farm in the Town of Bern, Southeast of Medford. Her mother, Doreen, is a 4th grade public school teacher. Her father, Ed, mills lumber, makes maple syrup, and is an avid hunter. She attended St. Anthony’s grade school in Athens with her older brothers, Tony and Ben.
When Schultz was in 7th grade, plummeting milk prices forced the family to sell the cows. This hammered home the challenges of living off the land. It motivated her to fight for the family farm and everything they represent.
Schultz attended Newman Catholic High School and graduated as salutatorian. As captain of the basketball team, she earned a Division I scholarship to UW Milwaukee. She graduated with a Master’s Degree with Political Science from UW Milwaukee.
She is currently helping on the family farm where she grew up and served as assistant coach with the Medford High School girls’ basketball team.
“Dana is energetic, welcomes fresh ideas, and is passionate about the people of this district – their health, farms, education, and jobs. Growing up on her family’s dairy farm helped shape her values and instilled in her the kind of work ethic and strong leadership our district deserves,” added supporter Marvel Lemke, Taylor County Register of Deeds.
“I’m running for Assembly because I want this district, my home, to be a place where our children and grandchildren can come home to. That means keeping good paying jobs, attracting more economic growth, and investing in our rural schools” Schultz concluded.
